The catalyst for 100 Hills was a gymnastics vaulting box, plucked from the artist’s childhood memory and placed in the studio. It’s large, unwieldy and inconvenient, with paintings being made by manoeuvring around it. The works all centre around this method of obstruction, to push up against something and repeatedly hit a wall, to climb a hundred hills and expect a different result, but to keep climbing anyway. This is the first time Wilson has exhibited an object alongside paintings since their undergraduate degree show at Goldsmiths College in 2016. The vault disrupts the space, and in the paintings we see heavy wooden objects, dark masses of shadow and hands grasping. These are works about walls, and the fantasies we come up with to scale those walls.
Hannah Wilson (born 1995, Milton Keynes, England) is an artist based in Glasgow. Wilson earned a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, London (2016) and an MFA at the Glasgow School of Art (2022). In 2024 they hosted their solo-exhibition Number One Fan with Steve Turner, Los Angeles, and their second solo-exhibition with Moosey, Never Cursed, in Norwich. Recent group-exhibitions include We heard a rumour that the gallery was shutting down but the gallery isn’t shutting down with Moosey, Norwich (2025) and Artists by Artists with VFA Galley, New York (2025).
