'Armchair Prophecies' by Rae Hicks

"In 2023’s Sick Building Syndrome I presented a series of works which ruminated on the practice of interrogating a city’s architecture as a potential source of psychological disaffection. This was combined with a recognition of an emerging suspicion toward our surroundings in general, and the potential for fantasy and myth around them.

Armchair Prophecies constitutes a step further along this path, with an emphasis on imagining various future scenarios as we increasingly become amateur authors of science fiction in our attempts to apprehend an expansive yet stable expectation of the next centuries.

Over the past twelve months I’ve thought about deception techniques by the powerful. I’ve thought about the contrivance of weather and I’ve thought a lot about adaptive building strategies and emergency shelter as people try to live on the move, or araae forced to live where they’re put.

I’ve imagined the world without us, as well as what kind of new things we may end up getting used to."
