Lives and works in Chicago Illinois
Moosey (UK) is proud to present six new paintings by Chicago based artist, Sean Gannon. This is the first presentation of the artist’s work and the gallery’s first time participating in EXPOchicago.
Sean has mounted several international and national solo exhibitions, as well participated in multiple group shows since graduating from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with his BFA in 2016.
As much a woodworker as he is a painter, he has built a system of framing and painting that is both a scaffolding and a source of inspiration for the work.
This display of six new works generously expands the artist’s focus on combining painting with fine woodworking, accompanying an often tongue-in-cheek humor.
Gannon’s flatly painted minimal canvases suggest vintage cartoons with a Chicago Imagist flavor. Carefully considered muted color tones and matte finish work to slow the viewer down and evoke stillness, while also providing the appropriate space for the woodworking elements be fully integrated into the artwork, not as mere punctuation. The unique combination of painting and finished American walnut calls to mind a connecting thread to the work of Richard Artschwager, although Gannon is decisively more rooted in the tradition of painting as an object. Here, the novelty of the visual joke is balanced with just enough austerity to settle the viewer into a focused stillness.
Open 11th - 14th April at EXPO Chicago, Navy Pier, 600 E Grand Ave, Chicago IL 60611
