Moosey, Norwich is excited to present ‘Retro Future’, a solo exhibition by American artist, Victoria V Nunley. In the parallel timelines of 'Retro Future’, the past and the future converge, intertwining narratives that unfold along the protagonist's journey.

The preoccupation with the past and apprehension about the future is explored, illustrating how they can create the feeling of stagnation within the present. Much like viewing a detective in a noir film, viewers are left to interpret clues and nuances, inviting them to immerse themselves in the narratives unfolding before them. Nunley states ... “I looked a lot at older futuristic films - I was really struck by the past’s interpretation of the future. How can something look futuristic but dated at the same time. I was fascinated by how, in a single aesthetic, the past and future (seemingly opposites) could be held together simultaneously.”

By visually exploring both retro and futuristic elements simultaneously, old technology, vintage fonts and visual languages from the golden age of American animation are present, with the protagonist styled in a western-style lambskin coat. These elements contrast with modern haircuts, futuristic colour palettes, neon signs and visual components of Japanese animation.

These opposites come together, highlighting Nunley’s skill in storytelling through painting. She allows the viewer to step inside the scenes, decoding and uncovering emotions for themselves and ultimately enabling them to place themselves within the parallel universe.
